The dynamics of relevance: adaptive belief revision
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents eight (previously unpublished) adaptive logics for belief revision, each of which define a belief revision operation in the sense of the AGM framework. All these revision operations are shown to satisfy the six basic AGM postulates for belief revision, and Parikh’s axiom of Relevance. Using one of these logics as an example, we show how their proof theory gives a more dynamic flavor to belief revision than existing approaches. It is argued that this turns belief revision (that obeys Relevance) into a more natural undertaking, where analytic steps are performed only as soon as they turn out to be necessary in order to uphold certain beliefs. keywords: dynamic belief revision, relevance, splittings, adaptive logics

The Adaptive Behavior Approach to Psychology
This paper discusses a rapidly evolving eld with great relevance for cognitive psychology, the eld of adaptive behavior. Its goal is to learn about biological behavior by constructing agents exhibiting that behavior, but it is very di erent from traditional arti cial intelligence. It is argued that rather than providing mere implementations of the abstract theories of cognitive psychology, the ...
متن کاملThe Irreducibility of Iterated to Single Revision
After a number of decades of research into the dynamics of rational belief, the belief revision theory community remains split on the appropriate handling of sequences of changes in view, the issue of so-called iterated revision. It has long been suggested that the matter is at least partly settled by facts pertaining to the results of various single revisions of one’s initial state of belief. ...
متن کاملInconsistent-tolerant base revision through Argument Theory Change
Reasoning and change over inconsistent knowledge bases (KBs) is of utmost relevance in areas like medicine and law. Argumentation may bring the possibility to cope with both problems. Firstly, by constructing an argumentation framework (AF) from the inconsistent KB, we can decide whether to accept or reject a certain claim through the interplay among arguments and counterarguments. Secondly, by...
متن کاملCharacterizing Relevant Belief Revision Operators
This paper introduces a framework for relevant belief revision. We represent agent’s beliefs in prime implicants and express agent’s preference on beliefs as a pre-order over terms. We define a belief revision operator via minimising the change of the prime implicants of the existing beliefs and the incoming information with respect to agent’s preferences. We show that such a belief revision op...
متن کاملHigh-Level Perception as Focused Belief Revision
We present a framework for incorporating perceptioninduced beliefs into the knowledge base of a rational agent. Normally, the agent accepts the propositional content of perception and other propositions that follow from it. Given the fallibility of perception, this may result in contradictory beliefs. Hence, we model highlevel perception as belief revision. We overcome difficulties imposed by t...
